How to Troubleshoot Pool Chlorinator Error Codes
Here’s how you can troubleshoot some common error codes and get your pool chlorinator working normally again…

Pool chlorinators often display error codes when something isn’t working properly. While these codes may seem intimidating, they are actually helpful in diagnosing and fixing issues.
Chlorine never reaches 100%.
An error code related to chlorine output being too low is often a sign that the salt level is either too low or too high. If there isn’t enough salt, the chlorinator cannot convert it into chlorine and if there is too much salt, the chlorinator may be limiting how much chlorine it produces, in order to not overload your pool with too much of it.
Use a saltwater test kit to measure the salt level and if there isn’t enough, simply add more. If there is too much, try backwashing to remove some of the over-salty water from the pool and then add clean water to reduce how much salt is in the pool overall.
Calcium buildup error or salt measurement inaccurate.
If the salt level is correct, even though the chlorinator indicates that it isn’t, check for any calcium buildup in the chlorinator cell, as that can cause issues with chlorine production. If you’re not sure how to clean it, read our article on how to clean a pool chlorinator cell.
If the cell is clean and the salt levels are correct, yet chlorine levels remain low, it could simply be a case of the water temperature being lower than what is considered as being at a comfortable swimming temperature. For every 1 degree below 28 degrees (Celsius), chlorine production can drop by 2%.
The other possibility is that the cell may be nearing its end of life. To help you determine if your cell needs replacing, read our article on the signs your pool chlorinator cell needs replacing.
Which KChlor Pool Chlorinator is best for you?
It depends on the size of your pool. To calculate how many litres are in your pool simply multiply the length by the width and then the average depth (depth at the deep end plus depth at the shallow end divided by 2).
Even if your pool is not rectangular in shape, this is still a good way to measure it, as it is always a good idea to overestimate the pool size anyway, so the chlorinator you choose does not have to work too hard to maintain it. Therefore any curves in the pool can be ignored.

Priming cell error.
Another common error relates to water flow. If the flow is too low, your chlorinator may not be able to generate enough chlorine. In fact, if there isn’t enough water surrounding the cell the circuit may not be completed, and the chlorinator may not work at all.
First, start by making sure any valves are in the open position and then check the filter, pump, and plumbing for blockages that could be restricting water flow. Flushing the system can often resolve the issue but ultimately the pump needs to be primed with water and the cell completely covered before the chlorinator can work properly.
Pump always on or won’t turn on.
If the pump runs continuously, it may be plugged into a power source independent of the chlorinator. Make sure that the pump is plugged into the socket on the chlorinator itself, and not straight to a wall socket. The chlorinator cannot control when the pump turns on and off if it isn’t plugged into the chlorinator’s socket. If the chlorinator won’t turn on, make sure there are no loose connections and the circuit breaker for the chlorinator hasn’t been tripped.
By understanding and addressing these common error codes, you can often get your pool chlorinator back up and running efficiently. Sometimes however, an error code may also indicate a malfunctioning part, such as the flow sensor or power supply so, if these steps don’t resolve the issue, contact a professional for assistance.
