How to Choose the Best Pool Chlorinator

There are many pool chlorinators that claim to be the best, so how do you choose between them? Here are some key things to look for.

Choosing a pool chlorinator is not just about how well it can do the job of chlorinating your pool, it is also about how easy it is to use and maintain.

The best pool chlorinator is one that doesn’t take an expert to set up and a technician to maintain. It needs to be super easy to use and basically look after itself for the most part.

Which Pool Chlorinators are easier to use, Analogue or Digital?

Some pool chlorinators have an analogue dial which is used to set the timer for turning the unit on and off. Unfortunately, these are often difficult to figure out, as you need to know how to set both the start time and the shut down time.

Manufacturers of these units claim that they use analogue because digital units are unreliable, which is not actually the case. If digital units were so unreliable then why do they come with a longer warranty than analogue units? In fact, analogue units have moving parts that can deteriorate over time whereas digital units do not.

Digital units are way easier to set up and use as well.

Why are K-Chlor’s Digital Units easier to use than others?

  • Setting the on and off time is like setting a digital clock, just choose the time for the unit to come on and hit enter, then do the same for off.
  • To quickly chlorinate a pool that has been left for an extended period and has started to go green, simply select “Super chlorinate” from the mode options and it will bring your pool back to life within 24 hours, then automatically revert to the timer mode thereafter.
  • If you have had a lot of people use your pool and it needs a boost of chlorine, simply select “Boost” and it will boost the chlorine levels in your pool for 6 hours and then revert back to the timer settings.
  • Backwashing sand filters has never been easier, just select “Backwash” and follow the prompts.
  • You can still set the unit to always on, should you wish to use it with another timer system you may already have in place.

Which KChlor Pool Chlorinator is best for you?

It depends on the size of your pool. To calculate how many litres are in your pool simply multiply the length by the width and then the average depth (depth at the deep end plus depth at the shallow end divided by 2).

Even if your pool is not rectangular in shape, this is still a good way to measure it, as it is always a good idea to overestimate the pool size anyway, so the chlorinator you choose does not have to work too hard to maintain it. Therefore any curves in the pool can be ignored.

What other Pool Chlorinator features are important?

  • Power Backup – Many pool chlorinators have a battery backup system, in case the power goes out and your timer settings get wiped. As important as this is, it is hard to know when the battery needs replacing and even rechargeable versions have a limited life expectancy, which is why rechargeable batteries rarely have a warranty greater than 3 months. K-Chlor Chlorinators go one better, they utilise a Super Capacitor that stores electricity to cover you for power outages and these are covered by the main unit’s 4 year warranty!
  • Self Cleaning Cell – most pool chlorinators require you to shut down the system every few months, disconnect the cell, open it, and then pour in a mixture of dangerous hydrochloric acid and water, to clean it. K-Chlor pool chlorinators come with a self cleaning cell. This is a reverse polarity cell that periodically reverses the polarity on the cell, so that it never gets build up on the cell. You don’t have to risk injury when trying to clean the cell, or even have to remember to do it!
  • Automatic Chlorination Management – as you know, too much chlorine can be just as dangerous as not enough however, most pool chlorinators just run blindly during the period set by the timer, with no way of you knowing whether there is too much or not enough chlorine being added to the pool. K-Chlor pool chlorinators have a clever micro processor that measures the level of chlorine and automatically reduces how much it is adding to your pool if the levels are too high. Kchlor takes into account your water temperature and salinity to help maintain the correct chlorine levels in your pool, simply enter in your settings on the LCD display, it’s that easy.
  • Australian Made – thankfully, there are more and more brands of pool chlorinators that are being made in Australia, just like K-Chlor pool chlorinators are. The reason why this is good is because spare parts will be readily available and quality of components used are usually of a higher standard than imported chlorinators.
  • Pump Protection – Should you be away and something happens such as a water leak that causes water to stop flowing through the pump, most pool chlorinators will keep running even though the pump is dry and thus burn out the pump. K-Chlor pool chlorinators detect when water has stopped flowing and will automatically shut the system down after 3 minutes, to protect your pump.
  • Warranty – Many pool chlorinators only come with a 12 or 24 month warranty, which makes you wonder if the manufacturer believes in their own product. Australian Made K-Chlor pool chlorinators come with a 4 year Full Warranty.
